One of my favorite pieces of furniture in our house is an old pie safe we bought early in our marriage. In our first house our kitchen had two doorways, with a narrow wall in between, so with tape measure in hand Pool Boy and I hit antique stores, auctions, and flea markets in search of one that would fit. We found it in really rough condition with pea green paint on it! First stop was straight to the refinishing stripper to get rid of that awful paint. The front doors were all solid, but I wanted glass in the top section. That’s where our dear friends Robert and Gerry Berti came in!
Besides being an excellent mechanic restoring cars, awesome dancers, joke tellers extraordinaire, and just some of the best people we’ve ever known, Robert also worked with STAIN GLASS!!!!! I wanted clear glass with designs and bevels, so after a trip to Quincy for supplies, Robert went to work on our glass inserts.

I’ve taken to displaying my banners here on my cabinet during the winter instead of the fire place mantel, and I really like it there! I was slow getting an Easter banner completed, so over the weekend I decided to go with SRING instead. Can you see the glass doors behind the banner, courtesy of Robert Berti? I display my resin/wood santa collection on the shelves (along with a layer of dust since I’ve not moved them for a year!)

All three layers of the banner are cut out of the Easter Joy DSP, the letters out of Shy Shamrock and Basic White, and the florals/greenery are from the no longer available Mix and Match Puffy Stickers, but the Easter Time Mix and Match Ephemera pack could substitute as well.
I’m going to be truthful – the Easter Joy DSP wasn’t one of my favorites because of the thickness, but I did like the back of the package such as the patterns above. For banners, the weight is perfect!
Final Thoughts…
We are in the midst of Holy Week with all of the extra services leading up to Easter morning. Pool Boy will go to pick up his momma Friday afternoon – thank you Elda for remembering to order the Easter lilies! – and other than having dinner with Evan’s family on Easter, it will be a quiet weekend. Megan’s family is still recovering from their Italy trip and staying home.
Back to the Berti’s – Gerry was the secretary at the small parochial school where I taught, BUT before that, I met her and Robert because of my black Chrysler New Yorker that had been totaled in a wreck. Remember I said he restored cars???? He bought my totaled car and restored it! I was driving through town, saw my former car parked in a driveway and being me, I stopped and introduced myself as the person who wrecked the car.
Pool Boy and I considered ourselves his best customers over the years, until the Family Funk – Maureen, Brad, Bret, and Lauren claimed the title!!! We will save that for a future story!
And FYI – I didn’t cause the wreck!!! At least, not that one. Have a great start to Holy Week, and God Bless!
