We had a great day fishing, which meant we were back home by late morning with our walleye limit cleaned and packaged for the freezer. So what to do when you’ve several hours to kill? We hopped the ferry and took off for Kelley’s Island!
There are several islands located off the Lake Erie shoreline. We visited one our first year here – Put In Bay. Yes, that’s the correct name – Put In Bay. The favorite means of transportation on the island is golf carts! We had a fun afternoon driving the island, stopping in shops and seeing the beautiful homes. So this year – we chose to go to Kelley’s Island instead.

Kelley’s Island is a bit smaller that Put In Bay, which also meant it was less commercialized, but golf carts everywhere for rental. The big draw to Kelley’s Island are the Glacial Grooves that are considered a national landmark. The Kelley brothers found the grooves back in the late 1800’s, and they kept them intact and separated from their quarry business. The glaciers were ones that stretched down from Canada, and they believe were a mile thick – not wide, thick! As the tip of the glacier moved south into Ohio, the warmer temperatures caused the glaciers to melt at ground level, making the glacier move and slide easier, cutting the smooth grooves in the rocks.

Last night we had dinner at a beautiful winery in Port Clinton known as Gideon Owen Wineries. Hard to tell which of us had the best dinner selection, but I’m pretty sure Pool Boy won (because I had the same dish last year!). He selected the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots and it truly is delicious. This year I chose the Lemon Ricotta Ravioli in a light cream sauce which was wonderful as well. The picture above is outside the winery’s restaurant.
So, no crafting, no projects today!! A bit of educational information and picture of Pool Boy and myself. You can read more on both the Glacial Grooves and Gideon Owen Winery online, but right not we are heading out for the final day of fishing, then Friday we head back home for about 18 hours. We switch suitcases, put the fishing stuff away, and head to St. Louis for our flight to Seattle on Sunday.
Here’s hoping you have a great day doing whatever makes you happy. And until next time, God Bless!
