We are gearing up for the granddaughters’ arrival late this afternoon along with our daughter Megan. Her husband Adam will be following behind Wednesday afternoon, but there are things to do to get ready for Thanksgiving and the girls will be right in the thick of it. I’m veering away from traditional pumpkin pie this year. Pumpkin is our least favorite pie of all, so instead I’m planning chocolate tres leche cake, apple cake, chocolate pie (we ONLY use the Pioneer Woman’s recipe here! No other will do!), and pecan pie bars.
What’s your traditional desserts to serve for Thanksgiving?? My mother would serve pumpkin, cherry, and coconut cream pies, along with a layered chocolate cake. And while everyone’s helping themselves to desserts, Pool Boy was helping himself to a second helping of sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and a hot roll. It would take a couple of hours more before he would be ready for desserts. She never missed serving candied sweet potatoes once she found out how much he loved them. And he was always there when the homemade rolls came out of the oven, because they were never better than right then to eat with butter! If my siblings or I had taken a roll right after she removed them, we were apt to have our hands swatted, but not Pool Boy.

Final Thoughts…

It’s times like Thanksgiving when I miss my mom the most. She was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed fixing meals for family and friends. Whether you were enjoying her homemade rolls, apple dumplings, or fresh peach or blackberry cobblers, you knew they were made with love. So when we gather for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, we will have her full Thanksgiving menu she served – minus the pies.
I guarantee though – she would also have deemed the Pioneer Woman’s chocolate pie recipe the best! Until Wednesday, have a great day preparing for Turkey Day, and I hope you find some time to enjoy a bit of crafting as well!!! God Bless friends!!!
