This is a busy but melancholy time for a teacher with the end of the school quickly approaching. Busy with all of the things we have to accomplish such as grades, inventory, professional development logs, purchase orders for next year, and preparing your room for summer maintenance. Melancholy though because for an elementary teacher you are saying goodbye to some kids who you have instructed, loved and watched over every weekday for over 9 months. You’ve watched them grow and mature and when they leave your door on that last day you will miss them all – yes, even the ones that caused you to pull your hair out!
I always felt that I had it better than a classroom teacher though because even though I only had them an hour weekly, I had them for 6 years in elementary, many I had for 3 more years in middle school, and some I had from K-12 years when I was the high school choir director! When you are in a small district your duties may span the whole spectrum of ages. I was the lucky one who got to experience them grow and mature from that scared kindergartener to the young man or woman who was ready to go out and change the world. And nothing warms my heart more than to have one of those past students reach out and connect with me. I now have students and parents who stamp with me, I’ve been chased down in Home Depot so they can show me pictures of their family, and I’ve had them unload from a car at Sonic to run over for hugs. My favorite was a young man who was handing me my order through the McDonald’s window, realized it was me, and ran out the front of the store just to give me a hug and tell me what he was doing. I was so afraid he was going to get in trouble I went in to talk with his manager to explain! And in my box of school memories I saved letters and cards with thanks from students and parents. Those words of thanks mean more to me than any award or accolade received.
