So many us consider Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer. Just yesterday I heard a radio announcer commenting on this very thing – the start of summer. But we forget over the weekend festivities that Memorial Day is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring those who gave their life as the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces. It’s a time to give thanks to those who protected our country with their lives, and to remember that their families also gave the ultimate sacrifice as well – the loss of their fallen soldier.
Here’s just a few details about the remembrance of Memorial Day:
- Veteran’s Day celebrates the service of all living U.S. military veterans. Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in our military.
- Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute at 3pm local time to reflect on and remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.
- It was originally known as Decoration Day and established after the Civil War to decorate the graves of fall soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags.
- Over 250,000 flags are placed at every headstone in Arlington National Cemetery, and over a million more are placed throughout the United States by veteran organizations, as well as community organizations.
So as Pool Boy and I begin our vacation, and as each of us celebrate the “unofficial beginning of summer”, let’s take time to reflect and remember those giving their lives so we have the FREEDOM to take vacations, we have the FREEDOM to join with family and friends at BBQ’s and parties, and that we have the FREEDOM to enjoy the weeks ahead of lazy summertime.
Have a blessed Memorial Day everyone! God Bless!
