YEARS AGO I discovered that Pool Boy Jim was a much better cook than me! I don’t mind cooking but i lean towards casseroles, pasta dishes, etc. I enjoy making desserts, but we came to a kind of nonverbal agreement years ago when he retired. I was still working part time at school, so Jim took on the cooking duties. He plans the meals, watches the grocery ads, and keeps everything rotated on the pantry shelves.
I on the otherhand prefer the clean up afterwards. I like to get everything back in place, wipe down the counters and island, dishes in the dishwasher, etc. So Pool Boy does the majority of the cooking in our home. He gives me a heads up when dinner is about ready, and calls me to the island when dinner is served. When we are finished eating, Pool Boy heads out of the kitchen and assumes the position in his recliner and I take on the cleanup duties. It works for us, although there have been times when he has asked “what should we do for dinner????” That question has nagged housewives for years!!!!

Even though I normally am in charge of desserts, this is one dessert that Jim has made for 20 plus years – pumpkin bars (or cake) with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. Since so many of you have requested the recipe after I posted the picture, I’ve made a PDF of the recipe!!! Feel free to print – I’ve given Pool Boy credit!!!

Final Thoughts…
There’s something homey about fresh baked goods in the fall months. My family didn’t eat lots of pumpkin – Mom only baked pumpkin pies for the holidays and they would always be the last desserts finished. Instead, Mom was an apple person – fresh apple cake, cooked apples, apple pie, and the favorite of all – her apple dumplings. What a treat to enjoy those!!!! Our daughter Megan has mastered Mom’s apple dumplings, and when Mom passed, Megan took a whole day before the funeral to make apple dumplings in honor of Mom for the entire family to enjoy. At Evan and Rachel’s wedding Megan brought several pans of apple dumplings for the wedding party and the cousins to enjoy. She would be proud to know that Megan carries on the apple dumpling tradition oh so well. And she would be proud of Pool Boy’s pumpkin bars too.
I can only hope she would be proud of me cleaning up after them!!! Until tomorrow, God Bless!!!
